This past weekend was Victoria Day in Canada! The man and I road tripped to visit my older brother and his girlfriend. My future mother-in-law looked after not one, but two German Shepherds while we were away. My brother and his darling girlfriend have an annual weekend long 2-4 party with all their friends. The guys go golfing and the girls drink or shop all day. It’s probably one of my favourite weekends of the year! We were so lucky to have gorgeous weather this year and shockingly enough, no rain!
We’ve been looking after my parent’s dog, Cruze, while they’re away on vacation. We’ve had her for two weeks and Ellie loves spending time with her. Cruze is a bit younger than Ellie and has trouble sleeping through the night. I got a glimpse as to what having a newborn will be like as Cruze is up a couple times each night to be let outside. Last night she really got herself into trouble as she decided to chew my most expensive pair of heels while I was fast asleep. I woke up to her being scolded and figured she might have chewed one of the King’s sneakers. Of course not, she ate a pair of heels I bought in Chicago and are no longer made. There are bigger problems in life, so I’m not too upset about it, however she has tons of toys to chew on before resorting to my pumps! We’re lucky that Ellie is not a chewer! Earlier in the day yesterday Cruzey took advantage of our friend grabbing a napkin and she hopped up and ate the pizza off his plate. I couldn’t help but laugh but he was by no means impressed. She’s too damn cute to stay angry at.
One thing I’ve really noticed is how much calmer Ellie is by having a companion around. Her separation anxiety hasn’t been nearly as bad as she’s not as lonely when we go out. I know she’s going to miss Cruze, and if it were the right time or if we had more space we would get her a friend. Having Ellie keeps us very busy as is!
Ellie has an intense attachment to my boyfriend and I. She’s currently on medicine for separation anxiety and we take her to training once a week. She loves going for car rides with us but panics when either of us get out of the car. She wants to be able to watch out for us at all times.
Today I took Ellie with me to Tim Horton’s and usually she tries to leap through the drive-thru window and into the cafe. However, today was different! She sat and waited for her timbits, let me pay (which is usually nearly impossible), and enjoyed her treats while I put my tea in the cup holder. This was such a huge accomplishment for Ellie. She loves people so much and wants to meet every person she sees, so being able to contain herself while the nice woman working gave her treats was a big deal!
Since she was such a good girl I took her to Pet Valu as we’ve been looking for an elk antler for her. It was her very first time coming into the pet store and she couldn’t have behaved better! There were two elderly people in the store who came over to pet her. She sat calmly and licked their hands while they pet her. This was another big deal! Whenever Ellie meets new people she wants to jump up on them and give them hugs and kisses (we’re working on this). However, this time she was so polite and gentle, I was so proud of her!
Today I took Ellie for her first official run with me. For those of you who don’t know Ellie is our 10 month old German Shepherd. This has been a long time in the making as it took a lot of training for her to stay beside me and stop before crossing the road. She did so well and only almost tripped me once. It would’ve been a messy tumble as I got tangled in her leash and probably would’ve landed on top of her. The sidewalks are bare so I was able to wear my running shoes for the first time in what seems like forever.
Ellie pushes me to go faster and I think she’d appreciate if I picked up the pace a bit. She also does not quite grasp the idea of a cool down and would rather continue running endlessly. Unfortunately at this point I can’t run for kilometres on end.
All in all she did so well and I’m so proud of her. We’re now both exhausted and ready to relax for the night. Now we just need the man of the house to cook dinner, worth a shot right?

Ellie is now 10 months, she has been doing so well at her training and we couldn’t be more proud. Tonight was a very cold evening and none of her classmates showed up, so she got spoiled by her trainer. Her trainer always has special treats for her like ham, swiss cheese and other raw meats.
Ellie loves going for truck rides. She is a baby and makes my boyfriend lift her in like a princess even though we all know she’s capable of making the hop.
Ellie makes us laugh every day. She snores, yawns and groans when she’s stretching out, which we find hilarious. I love to watch her while she’s dreaming about chasing something because she starts moving her legs while she’s laying down. I can tell she’s on a mission and wonder what she’s chasing.
My boyfriend and I talked about how getting her has started our little family and we couldn’t be happier. ❤
Your pet is a part of the family! When it comes to your wedding you may want to involve your dog or cat in someway. You can involve your pet in engagement photos, save the dates, wedding photos, or even the ceremony.
A few things to consider if you would like your pet to be in the ceremony are:
- Can my dog behave around large crowds of people?
- Will my dog sit quietly during the ceremony?
- Does the venue allow animals?
- Is there someone you can trust to look after your pet before, during and after the ceremony?
Here are a few ways to include your best buddy in your special day.
1. Bring them for the photo shoot! It only seems right to include them in your new family photos.
2. Have them be the ring bearer. This would take a well trained dog who is good in new environments and around tons of people.
3. Incorporate them into your save the date. I think this idea is so cute and there are so many different ways your pet can be involved! This is nice for those who can’t have their pet there on their actual wedding day. Have them hold the date around their neck or simply have them in the picture with you and your fiance!
4. Have them as “best dog.” Once again, your dog would need to be well trained and able to sit still and quietly during the ceremony. For most dogs this type of situation would be too exciting for them to contain themselves!
5. Have them there while you get ready.
6. Allow them to walk the aisle before you to announce your arrival.
Winter Walks – Karamma
Our Ellie can be a handful at times. As a 10 month old German Shepherd she has so much energy to burn. On Fridays I work from home and can find it difficult to keep her entertained. She wants to play with me, she whines for attention and nothing seems to keep her occupied. I take her for a walk at lunch time but when I’m home all she wants is some serious mother daughter time.
Her Kong is one of her favourite toys but I found peanut butter only took her a few minutes to roll through. So I did a little research as to what else I could stuff in it to keep her busy and happy. Of all things, frozen apple sauce was suggested. Before I put it in the Kong I dipped my finger in the jar and gave her a lick to make sure she actually liked it. She seemed impressed so I stuffed her Kong full and put it in the freezer for a couple hours. I removed it and gave it to her on her bed and she was very excited. This kept her busy for an entire hour! She loved it! I was able to get work done without her begging for me to play with her. She was so exhausted from all the hard work that she took a nice nap and calmed down significantly. If you have an energetic pup try this trick! If you have any DIY Kong Recipes that your dog loves please share them below ! 🙂
Over the weekend we celebrated my boyfriend’s birthday and Valentine’s Day! This year for his birthday I made my main squeeze a gift basket with all of his favourite things. A bottle of Hendrick’s Gin, red wine, chocolate, Keg steak sauce, stemless wine glasses, a travel pillow, and a Jamie Oliver grilling guide.
To do something a bit more personal I asked our talented dog walker, Hayley, to take some shots of our baby, Ellie. I’m not picky nor did I have any standards whatsoever of what these pictures may turn out like. For anyone that knows our baby they know having Ellie sit still for a photo is an obstacle in itself. To be honest, I was hoping for all of Ellie in one frame, and Hayley went above and beyond my expectations.
Hayley sent me the photos and I couldn’t believe the amazing shots she captured of Ellie. My jaw dropped and I could barely contain my excitement. I was so happy I nearly cried. Yes, I’m a crazy dog owner who loves my girl like a child. It took everything in me not to show my boyfriend immediately. Instead, I sent the photos to all of our friends and family to show them the stunning pictures. I printed off plenty to give to our loved ones. We also decided to blow some up and have them printed on canvas.

Hayley took these gorgeous photos in our house after Ellie’s walk. If anyone in the Georgina area is looking for professional pet photography I highly recommend her. You can leave a comment below for her email address. Not only is she incredible with Ellie but these photos are something we will display in our house forever.

I’m hoping to invite Hayley over one day to have a family photo done, in the nicer weather of course. In the meantime, I am so happy to have these special shots of Ellie.
